There has been wranglings concerning the future of Asante Kotoko head coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor following the team’s exit from the CAF Confederation Cup.
Some section of the media, supporters and sympathizers of the club are calling for the immediate exits of the former Black Stars central midfielder with others also pleading for his stay as the head coach.
After their exit from the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, management of the Porcupine Warriors invited the 47- year old for a meeting to provide to the management a comprehensive report of their just ended Africa campaign.
According to a reliable report, the meeting ended successfully and the management of the Porcupines have concluded on retaining the former Vfl Wolfsburg midfielder to prepare the club for the yet to be announced league season in the country.
Akonnor, under his tutulage as the gaffer for the Kumasi based side qualified the club to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time since 2008 under coach Bashir Hayford.
The team touted as the underdogs in the group C per player quality and experienced in African competition shocked the entire continent with a blistering of performance and placed third in the group consisting of Al Hilal Omdurman, Nkana FC and Zesco United.
After the competition, four players, Felix Annan, Felix Annan, Kwame Bonsu Conte and Burkinabe international Songne Yacouba have received national team call ups. With this the management were happy with the coach and believe with enough time he can build a stronger side.
Akonnor was appointed on October 1, 2018 on a three year deal as the head coach of the Porcupines after parting ways with Obuasi Ashantigold SC and has only spent six months at Kotoko.
