The national Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has given reason for changing the party’s leadership in Parliament.[ads2]
The NDC made changes to its leadership in parliament on January 23 in a press statement signed by the General Secretary, Fiifi Kwetey.
Dr Cassiel Ato Forson was appointed the minority leader, replacing Tamale South MP, Haruna Iddrisu who was occupying the position.
Emmanuel Kofi Armah Buah, MP for Ellembelle in the Western region was also named the deputy minority leader, replacing Ketu North legislator James Avedzi Klutse.[ads3]
Muntaka Mubarak had his position as the Minority Chief Whip handed over to Adaklu MP, Kwame Agbodza.
However, Banda MP, Ahmed Ibrahim and Comfort Doyo Ghansah who is the MP for Ada maintained their positions as first and second deputy minority whip.
The changes has created confusion in the NDC but Mr Asiedu Nketia has given reason arguing that NPP MPs are cooperating with Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin when NDC lawmakers are not doing same even though Mr Bagbin is from the NDC.[ads4]
Addressing the NDC UK/Ireland Chapter during a visit to London after accompanying former president John Dramani Mahama for a public lecture engagement at Chatham House, Mr Nketia said “My priority in Parliament is to see our parliamentary caucus working together and also cooperating with the Speaker of Parliament. Why did we struggle to get an NDC person elected as a Speaker of Parliament?
“There are certainly some advantages and those advantages can be tapped into when your leadership is cooperating with the speaker. So we cannot have a situation where NPP is cooperating with the speaker and our NDC leadership has challenges with the speaker and if you are given a party whose leadership in Parliament is not working together, what will you do? You make the changes or you resign and I am not about to resign.”[ads5]
