As part of preparations towards the 2024 general elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will elect new executives on December 17 to steer the affairs of the party.[ads2]
Out of the various positions up for grabs, the chairmanship race has garnered humongous debate among members of the party with some endorsing the incumbent, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo to retain the seat while others are on the side of Johnson Asiedu Nketiah who has been the General Secretary of the party for many years.
Even though Asiedu Nketiah has won the heart of some members of the NDC, a revelation from former Ghana’s Ambassador to UK and Ireland, Victor Smith indicate that Asiedu Nketiah disrespected John Dramani Mahama and the party’s Council of Elders on his decision to contest the NDC Chairmanship seat.
According to the former Ambassador, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah was advised to rescind his decision to contest Samuel Ofosu Ampofo for the party’s top seat but he ignored and decided to move away from his seat as the General Secretary for the Chairmanship position.
On who he would love to win the NDC Chairmanship seat, Victor Smith speaking on Onua TV’s Maakye Morning Show said, “In my view, I want Ofosu Ampofo to be retained and Asiedu Nketiah as the NDC’s campaign manager for the 2024 elections.”[ads3]
“Asiedu Nketiah moved away from his seat as the General Secretary and cannot go back should he lose the elections since he didn’t file for that, and with all the confidence that he claims he has had, I believe he will be a good campaign manager. I personally prefer Ofosu Ampofo as the Chairman because he has gathered enough experience that can help bring the party to power in 2024. I heard he [Asiedu Nketiah] has decided to venture into farming should he lose the elections but I would love him to help the NDC return to power in 2024 by becoming the campaign manager”, he added.
Meanwhile, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo is confident of winning the NDC chairmanship seat despite a keen competition from Johnson Asiedu Nketiah.
“I want to assure you that I will win my re-election bid as the national chairman of the NDC. I will win it hands down and I will lead the NDC to power,” he told the Daily Graphic in an interview.[ads4]
Mr Ampofo said he had that to show for his stewardship, adding that the delegates of the party would retain him as the national chairman to lead the party to victory in the 2024 general election.
He said throughout his campaigns, he had been well received by the members of the party and he was optimistic that would culminate in his victory at the national delegates’ congress of the party to continue as the national chairman.
Mr Ampofo pledged to continue to work as the leader of the party to unite it for victory in the 2024 general election.[ads5]
