Ghanaian sprinter and 100-meter national record holder, Benjamin Azamati, has extended a generous hand to victims of the recent Kantamanto fire disaster by donating ₵10,000 to aid relief efforts.
The fire, which occurred on January 1, 2025, devastated a large portion of the Kantamanto market in Accra, leaving many traders without livelihoods and causing significant losses.
“With a heavy heart, I acknowledge the devastating fire that has ravaged our community. I stand with every individual and family affected; you are not alone. As an athlete, I know the value of opportunities to chase my dreams and to achieve success. But I believe true greatness lies in using our blessings to uplift others.Today, I give back to those who need it most, donating this sum as a gesture of solidarity, hope and compassion. This is my birthday wish for all the mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters affected by this disaster. In addition to this donation, I am committed to raising awareness, supporting rebuilding efforts, and inspiring others to lend a helping hand.To those who have lost so much, yet keep moving forward and not giving up: your courage inspires me. Even in dark times, we are stronger together. This donation reminds us of solidarity and courage shown by those affected” Azamati said in a statement released.
The donation, widely lauded on social media and news platforms, reflects Azamati’s commitment to giving back to the community. Known for his excellence on the track, the athlete has also become a symbol of hope and compassion off the field.
The Kantamanto market, a hub for trade and commerce in Ghana’s capital, is home to hundreds of vendors and small-scale business owners. The fire destroyed stalls, goods, and personal belongings, leaving victims desperate for assistance. Azamati’s contribution is expected to provide some relief to those affected as authorities and other stakeholders mobilize resources for reconstruction and recovery efforts.
Ghanaians have taken to social media to praise the athlete for his timely intervention, describing him as a role model not only in sports but also in humanitarian endeavors.
As cleanup efforts continue at the site of the fire, Azamati’s donation serves as a reminder of the power of solidarity and the need for collective action in the face of adversity.
