A terrible rainstorm left five people dead and several injured in Badu, a farming community in the Tain district of the Bono region, on Monday afternoon.
On the contrary, more than 20 people, including children, are currently fighting for their lives in Tain District and Wenchi Methodist Hospitals.
The victims were watching a football match at Badu R/C School Park, which was organized by the Badu Traditional Council as part of activities marking the annual Fordjour Yam Festival, dubbed “BOMTUOā€¯.
According to an eyewitness, Nana Owusu, some spectators, including chiefs, were rushed into an abandoned classroom block for shelter. However, the rainstorm got worse and ripped off the roof and crushed some of the victims who were in the classrooms.
The eyewitness continued that those with minor injuries were taken to Badu Medical Center, while those in critical condition were transferred to Tain District Hospital and Methodist Hospital from Wenchi for treatment there.
He concluded that one person died on the spot, while the remaining four were confirmed dead at the hospital, adding that some of the injured were treated and discharged.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Member for Badu Asuafu, Joseph Kyereh, explained that the incident had thrown Asuafu and Fawoman, both suburbs of Badu, into mourning.
Bono Regional Minister Justina Owusu-Banahene, who also confirmed the incident last Monday at the Ghana Investment Promotion Center (GIPC) business forum in Sunyani, said she was preparing to visit the community to express condolences to the bereaved families and victims.
