The 13th African Games, which will take place in Accra, Ghana, from March 8–23, 2024, will see the Ministry of Youth and Sports transform the Borteyman Sports Complex into a University of Sports for Development following the event.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo commissioned the Borteyman Sports Complex on February 13, 2024.
This, according to the Ministry, is to ensure that the facilities at the Borteyman Sports Complex are well maintained for the continuous benefit of the country.
Speaking at a press conference today, March 4, 2024, Sector Minister Mustapha Ussif emphasized that “this will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions.” He added that additional infrastructure, including hostel facilities, football pitches, cafeterias, and a medical center, will be provided at the site.
For him, converting the facilities into a Sports Development University will “position Ghana as a sports hub within the West African sub-region.”
Table tennis, handball, tennis, volleyball, swimming, badminton, and triathlon are among the seven competitive sports that can be played at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
Notably, table tennis, tennis, triathlon, and badminton are the four sports that will serve as qualifiers for the Paris, France, Olympic Games in 2024.
The 1,000-seat swimming pool at the Borteyman facilities is one of its most notable features. It consists of an eight-lane warm-up pool and a 10-lane competition pool.
A second venue is the multipurpose Sports Hall, which can accommodate 1,000 spectators for sports like table tennis, badminton, basketball, netball, and weightlifting.
