Ghana prepares for crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar, the inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars squad has sparked discussion. Nations FC’s Razak Simpson, Medeama’s Kamaradini Mamudu, and Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare have all received call-ups, offering them a chance to compete for a spot in Otto Addo’s lineup.
While many have welcomed their selection, former Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan (CK) Akonnor has emphasized that merely receiving a call-up does not guarantee playing time. Speaking to Graphic Sports, Akonnor challenged the players to prove themselves in training to earn their place in the starting XI.
“They have been invited, but at training, if they show signs that they want to play, they must convince the technical team that they are not just bench players but are here to start,” Akonnor said. “If they give the coach that signal, he wouldn’t hesitate to use them because his goal is to field the best players and win matches.”
The three local players have been actively participating in training sessions at the Accra Sports Stadium, hoping to make an impression before Friday’s match against Chad.
Akonnor also warned the Black Stars against underestimating their opponents, cautioning that modern football is unpredictable.
“Under normal circumstances, these teams shouldn’t worry us, but football has changed, so we have to take every match seriously,” he advised.
Ghana will face Chad on March 21 at 19:00 GMT before traveling to Morocco for their encounter with Madagascar on March 24. The Black Stars will be aiming for back-to-back victories to strengthen their position in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
