The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. The tournament will now be held in August 2025 to allow more time for preparations.
According to a media release issued on January 14, 2025, CAF’s decision was influenced by recommendations from its Technical and Infrastructure experts. While progress has been made in upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, and hospitals, the experts concluded that more time is needed to meet CAF’s standards for hosting a successful tournament.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed his gratitude to Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni for their leadership and commitment to infrastructure development. “I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations,” Dr. Motsepe said, adding his confidence that the facilities will meet CAF standards by the new date.
The official draw for CHAN 2024 will still take place as scheduled on January 15, 2025, in Nairobi, Kenya, while the exact commencement date for August 2025 will be announced later.
CAF remains committed to delivering a world-class CHAN tournament, ensuring that all necessary preparations are completed to guarantee its success.
