The Accra High Court has fined former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan GH₵1 million for his malicious prosecution of journalist Anthony Sarfo.
Gyan was fined because the court determined that he had maliciously pursued journalist Anthony Sarfo.Gyan first filed a lawsuit against Sarfo and four other people for extortion after claims that the former Black Stars captain had a woman named Sarah Kwablah.
After being detained and accused, Sarfo and the other four people were ultimately declared not guilty and exonerated.
After being freed, Anthony Sarfo filed a lawsuit for malicious prosecution against Gyan and his manager, Anim Addo, seeking GH₵ 1 million in damages.
Earlier today, Friday December 8, the court, presided over by Justice Ernest Owusu Dapaa, declared the verdict, finding Gyan and his manager, Samuel Anim Addo, guilty of fabricating charges against the plaintiff, including extortion and unauthorized arrest.
The court also stated that Gyan’s reputation was being protected by Anim Addo’s in order to finalize his move to China at the time. Therefore, Gyan’s safety was the reason for the arrest rather than the publication.
Accordingly, Anthony Sarfo received GH₵ 900,000 in damages from the court, along with GH₵ 111,000 for the 111 months he was unemployed.
