The Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Community in Ghana has donated medical supplies to the Greater Accra Regional Hospital to aid in the fight against the novel Coronavirus in Ghana.
The exercise forms part of the Chinese government’s effort in supporting developing countries in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic.
The management of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital received 150 respirators, 20,000 medical masks, 1600 N95 masks, 120 protective suits, 60 face shields and 100 medical goggles, milk, cocoa powder, cereal among others from the Chinese Embassy and the Chinese Community in Ghana.
Speaking during the donation exercise, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Shi Tang Wang said the coronavirus pandemic is the most extensive to afflict humanity in a century and it’s a daunting challenge which posses grave threat to human life and health.
He believes definitely humanity have to fight the devastating disease and win hence the Chinese government, upholding the vision of a global community of shared future decided to support developing countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America to improve the capacity and performance in epidemic prevention and control.
His Excellency Shi Tang Wang revealed that China and Ghana stood hand in hand since the outbreak of the disease in the Asian country.
“At the beginning of this year when China’s epidemic situation was in its most difficult period, Ghana has given us a lot of support. And in return, when the outbreak began in Ghana since March, China spares no pains to help Ghana and other African countries in fighting against the virus. China is the first country to send medical supplies by chartered flight to Ghana.
“In the past few month, batches after batches of medical donations have been sent to Ghana in different ways, including Chinese government assistance, Jack Ma foundation, the local Chinese community and enterprises donations, and etc. We will continue to do so in the future.
To enhance strategic communication between China and Africa and build a consensus on uniting to fight against the pandemic, Shi Tang Wang disclosed that an extraordinary China-Africa Summit on solidarity against Covid-19 will be held in China’s capital Beijing.
“The Extraordinary Summit, jointly proposed by China, South Africa, the rotating chair of the AU and Senegal, the co-chair of the FOCAC, will be held via videolink. Leaders of African countries including the members of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union and the rotating chairs of Africa’s major sub-regional organizations and the Chairperson of the AU Commission will attend upon invitation.
“The Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Director-General of the World Health Organization will also attend the meeting as special guests.
“As the pandemic continues to afflict the world, including the African continent, convening this extraordinary summit at this crucial moment demonstrates once again the China-Africa brotherhood through thick and thin. It will not only consolidate the two sides’ consensus on solidarity against the virus and promote fresh development in China-Africa cooperation, but also bolster multilateralism and boost international cooperation against COVID-19. China stands ready to work together with other participants for a successful summit.
He concluded by lauding the Ghanaian government on measures put in place to fight against the novel Coronavirus.
Present at the donation exercise were Hon. Bernard Okoe Boye, Deputy Minister for Health,
Dr. Emmanuel Srofenyoh, Medical Director of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, and some medical and nursing staffs of the Greater Accra Regional Hospital.
