A charity group based in the United Kingdom, DESO (Disabled Equipment Sent Overseas) supported this year’s commemoration of the May 9th stadium disaster that saw over a hundred supporters perishing at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The tragic incident in Ghana’s football history occurred on May 9, 2001, during a crucial game between the two most glamorous clubs in Ghana football Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko in Accra.[ads1]
Over a hundred souls perished in that tragic incident while others were injured leading to some being disabled.
As part of activities to commemorate the tragic incident, ace sports administrator Herbert Mensah who has been at the forefront of commemorating the incident once again stormed the Ashanti Region to mark this year’s edition.
This year’s activities saw Herbert Mensah who was the Asante Kotoko Chairman when the incident occurred in Kumasi to make some donations.

Due to restrictions imposed as a result of the 2020 novel Coronavirus pandemic, this year’s commemoration was limited to a small gathering of persons.
Speaking to the media after the presentation, Herbert Mensah who is currently the President and Board Chairman of the Ghana Rugby Football Union was grateful to DESO for once again supporting the May 9th disaster.
He was also grateful to the other sponsors for making the commemoration of the event successful despite the Covid-19 challenges.
He said that DESO (Disabled Equipment Sent Overseas) is a UK based charity run by ‘Aunty Mavis’, a British-Ghanaian woman whose charity work in Ghana spans over 64 years.
Beneficiaries of the donation were grateful to DESO and Herbert Mensah for the kind gesture and prayed for God’s blessings and asked for other corporate bodies to emulate what they have done.
