Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, a renowned cellular pathologist and lifestyle wellness consultant, has stated that sharing a single bowl during meals can contribute to the spread of Hepatitis B.
He said that sharing soupy dishes like tuo zaafi, omo tuo, or fufu from the same bowl can cause people to “swallow saliva” from one another.
He explains this by saying that when people put their hands in their mouths and dip them into the soup, they can contaminate the soup with saliva and spread the disease if they have Hepatitis B.
Prof. Akosa led a conversation on practical ways to improve the quality of healthcare in Ghana on Tuesday at the Ghana Shippers Authority Hall at Ridge in Accra.
To help prevent diseases, the former director-general of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) was sharing tips on eating well and leading a healthy lifestyle.
“Once upon a time, we were all there, there was group participation, group eating, group everything…
“And even the eating—I, Prof. Akosa, did not realize until later that this is how the hepatitis B virus spreads.” We didn’t know that. By the time you finish, you are drinking saliva, and we are all eating fufu.”
“I mean five, six of you, you are doing omo tuo or you are doing fufu, what do you think you are doing, you are going in like that and then you come in, by the time you are ending you are drinking saliva, it is the easiest way to spread hepatitis B, he said.
Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, who was leading a discussion on practical ideas intended to improve quality health in Ghana, was sharing his thoughts with a health policy and management expert, Prof. Aaron Abuosi.
The two prominent professionals were the main speakers on “Quality Health for All” at the latest edition of the Graphic National Dialogue Series.
