The Minister of Education, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum has directed the management of University of Ghana to comply with the 15 percent fee increment as approved by Parliament.[ads2]
This comes after agitations by student leaders that some universities were charging higher than the 15 percent approved by Parliament for the 2022/2023 academic year.
Following the tension that this raised at some campuses, Dr Adutwum at a meeting on January 5 with senior members of the universities including University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Ghana, Legon (UG), University of Education, Winneba (UEW) and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT),said investigations by the ministry indicate that University of Ghana is implementing about a 37% increment of fees.[ads3]
The University said it will engage its Council to deliberate on the 15% increment and how feasible it could be for the school to implement.
Dr Adutwum said at the meeting that each university was given the opportunity to explain the rationale behind the recent reviews.[ads4]
“We heard from University of Education, Winneba, we’ve also heard from our great university, University of Cape Coast, about steps that they have taken.
“In cases where the fees were over 15 percent, they are doing refunds. They want to live within the 15 percent as mandated by Parliament, so I am very happy this morning.”[ads5]
