The Sekondi Sports Stadium might replace Accra Sports Stadium for the upcoming 2018 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations after a delegation from Confederation of Africa Football, the Local Organising Committee and some authorities from the Western Region inspected the facility today, July 8, 2018.
Honourable Alex Agyekum, Member of Parliament for Mpohor in the Western Region led a team of Officials from CAF headed by, Mr Sampson Adamu, the LOC chairperson, Honourable Freda Prempeh and some officials from the Ministry of Youth and Sports to do an inspection at the Sekondi Sports Stadium, as a possible replacement for the Accra Sports Stadium for the upcoming African Women’s Cup of Nations.
A delegation from CAF, led by the Competitions Director, Mr Sampson Adamu arrived in Ghana last Friday for a three-day working visit to assess progress being made towards the staging of the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) in Ghana later this year.
The Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadium have earlier been earmarked as potential venues to host the tournament.
But after the inspection by the team from CAF and the Ministry, the team decided to inspect the Sekondi Sports Stadium as an alternative venue to replace the Accra Sports Stadium considering the cost involved in renovating the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Queens of Ghana will host seven other nations from the continent on November 17 to December 1.
The Black Queens are in search of the first title and also to fight for one of the three slots available for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted by France.
