A write up on their website mourning the demise of Jaret Wolfgang reads, “IWolfgang Jerat had an early desire to become a football coach. Growing up in the Kalk district of Cologne on the right bank of the Rhine, he wore the jersey of various amateur clubs from and around Cologne as a defender over the years, but was also active at VfB Remscheid. With the SSG Bergisch Gladbach 09, Jerat rose to the league in 1986, but then he stopped playing at the age of 29 and switched to the coaching bench. After studying at the German Sport University in Cologne, he had completed the football coaching course between March and October 1985, including “Winni” Schäfer and Hermann Gerland in the same course. For the 1986/87 season, he became Willibert Kremer’s assistant with the top division club Viktoria Köln.
“In 1988 Wolfgang Jerat first came into contact with North African football and trained the Tunisian first division club US Monastir for nine months. Until the very end, he maintained excellent contacts in Tunisia, but also in other African countries. One year after working in Tunisia, Jerat took over the Wuppertaler SV, with which he was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga as a master of the Oberliga Nordrhein.
“The then FC managing director Wolfgang Schänzler brought him to the 1st FC Cologne in the summer of 1992 as coach of the 1st amateur team. When FC separated from head coach Jörg Berger in February 1993, those responsible for President Klaus Hartmann and manager Karl-Heinz Thielen Jerat appointed the boss to the licensed players. “Why should we wander far when the good is so close?” Said Hartmann. But the young football teacher did not manage to turn the sporting trend, the club was experiencing ever greater relegation difficulties. In April 1993, FC signed Morten Olsen, the third coach in one season, and Jerat became Olsen’s assistant. After a successful time reaching the semi-finals in the 1995 DFB Cup, the team slipped into crisis, in August the duo was released and Jerat returned to Wuppertaler SV in the Regionalliga West / Südwest. He then retired from the coaching business for almost nine years and worked, among other things, as a freelance scout – for example at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he watched the opponents for Olsen, who is now Denmark’s national coach.

“In spring 2004, Jerat returned to the sidelines as FC Junkersdorf coach. He looked after the club from the west of Cologne in the Oberliga Nordrhein and the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein. The engagement in Junkersdorf was followed seamlessly by the third term at Wuppertaler SV, which was quite successful in terms of sport but failed due to internal problems. When Wolfgang Jerat was given leave on February 6, 2008, the WSV was the front runner in the Regionalliga Nord. In Wuppertal, animal lover Jerat also caused a stir when he not only took his mixed breed dog “Jago” with him for training, but also chauffeured to the away games in his own car instead of riding on the team bus.
“After a short stay as a coach in Pristina (Kosovo), Jerat took over the regional league team Viktoria Köln. For health reasons, however, he resigned after only two months in January 2013. The divorced father of daughter Jasmin and son Tim, who worked as a football professional for Arminia Bielefeld, among others, then continued to live in Cologne. He had further contact with FC and especially companions like Karl-Heinz Thielen and Bernd Cullmann. Most recently, Jerat worked for a soccer academy in Ghana. There he died unexpectedly at the age of 65. 1. FC Köln mourns with Wolfgang Jerat’s family and will always keep him an honorable memory.
