In just their second season in the top division, FC Samartex accomplished a spectacular accomplishment by winning the 2023/2024 Ghana Premier League title.
Samartex 1996 won the trophy with two games remaining because they have continuously outperformed more seasoned teams.
In the face of opposition from Nations FC, Aduana FC, and Medeama SC, the Samreboi-based team survived to claim first place. On a rainy Sunday, June 2, 2024, they defeated Bibiani Gold Stars 1-0 in matchday 32 at the Nsenkyire Sports Complex, sealing their victory.
Just before halftime, Emmanuel Mamah scored the game-winning goal to put his team ahead in what would ultimately prove to be the pivotal moment of the contest. With a six-point deficit into matchday 32 after Aduana FC’s defeat to Bechem United on Saturday, Medeama SC was the only team with a chance to challenge FC Samartex.
But in the last seconds of their match at Akoon Park versus Heart of Lions, the reigning champions were taken aback, giving FC Samartex the upper hand. At the Nsenkyire Stadium, the triumph brought about happy scenes as devoted supporters celebrated with unbridled enthusiasm and excitement.
Having only experienced premier league football in their first season, Samartex has accomplished the unimaginable in just two years.
With Samartex’s victory, Asante Kotoko in 2014 became the first Ghana Premier League winner to successfully defend the title.
Following Medeama SC, Hasaacas, and Sekondi XI Wise, who have won the title previously, Samartex are now the fourth team from the Western Region to win the Ghana Premier League. With 32 games played, FC Samartex has won 18, drawn 4, and lost 10, demonstrating their strong performance so far this season.
