But Secretary of the Ghana Inshore Fisheries association in Sekondi, Nii Ayitey Botwey tells Skyy News’ Nana Kumi, the fall in prices for fish is expected in such bumper season.
“When there is more catch price go down, when there’s scarcity price shoot up”, he mentioned.
Our checks with the fishmongers revealed that a bucket and a basin of fish is being sold at GH40 to GH50, and GH350 -GH400 respectively at the harbour.
Queen mother for the fishmongers association at the harbour, Faustina Ayi confirmed to Skyy News the situation was even worse yesterday.
“Because it was a Tuesday, the fishermen could get buyers for their catch. They had to throw a lot of them back into the ocean because they cant process them”, she emphasized.
Madam Ayi added that the phenomenon is a recurring one.
Some fishermen and fishmongers have termed the situation as an unfortunate one, particularly in time where the country is battling with a dwindling fish stock to feed the masses.
