The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has officially endorsed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, ahead of the nation’s general elections scheduled for December 7th.
The announcement was made during a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, December 4th. Speaking on behalf of the GFP, Deputy General Secretary Jerry Offei Addo highlighted the alignment between the two parties’ policies, emphasizing their shared commitment to addressing critical socio-economic issues.
Addo underscored key proposals from the NDC’s campaign, including the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank, the provision of free tertiary education for able-bodied individuals, and the creation of a 24-hour economy. These policies, he said, resonate deeply with the GFP’s mission to advance women’s empowerment and improve the lives of marginalized communities.
The endorsement was bolstered by remarks from the GFP’s acting national chairman, national organizer, and national youth organizer, who collectively dismissed claims that the decision was divisive or contrary to the legacy of the party’s late founder, Akua Donkor. They asserted that the endorsement was a consensus decision reflecting the party’s commitment to its ideals.
“This decision honors the vision of our founder by prioritizing the needs of the underprivileged and promoting inclusive development,” the acting chairman added.
The endorsement marks a significant moment in the lead-up to the December elections, signaling a potential boost for the NDC as it competes against the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Political analysts suggest the GFP’s support could influence undecided voters, particularly in constituencies where the GFP has a strong grassroots presence.
As Election Day approaches, the collaboration between the NDC and the GFP is expected to focus on mobilizing support for policies aimed at addressing economic disparities and improving social welfare.
