Former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye has made a bold prediction, asserting that Ghana possesses greater potential for success in boxing compared to football.
This assertion comes amidst a recent surge of talented young boxers emerging from the northern regions of the country.
Vanderpuye, a passionate advocate for boxing, pointed to Ghana’s rich history in the sport, highlighted by the achievements of legendary fighters like Azumah Nelson and David Kotey.
He believes that the current crop of boxers, have the potential to carry on this legacy and elevate Ghana’s status in international boxing.
“We have the potential to become much more better sports nation through boxing than in football,” he said in an interview with JoySports.
“I was so much into the Boxing League and I saw most of the boxers who were got had all come from the North. Northerners are naturally strong, but it is the knowledge, skill, and technique that they need to adopt. When you have somebody who is so much passionate, interested and you transfer knowledge, technique to the person and he gets that to compliment his natural strength, he is super” he added.
The former minister emphasized the need for proper training, support, and infrastructure to nurture these young talents.
He also called for increased investment in boxing, both from the government and the private sector, to create a conducive environment for the growth of the sport.
Vanderpuye’s statement has sparked debate among sports enthusiasts and pundits. While some agree that Ghana has the potential to excel in boxing, others remain optimistic about the future of football in the country.
Regardless of the outcome, it is clear that Ghana possesses a wealth of sporting talent, and with the right support and investment, the nation can achieve great success in both boxing and football.
