Ghana’s hopes of winning gold in table tennis singles at the current African Games were dashed yesterday when the Black Loopers were eliminated from the individual event.
In the men’s and women’s table tennis singles competitions, not a single player from the host country advanced past the round of 16.
Cynthia Kwabi was the only player who stood as Ghana’s only hope after winning her first-round tie against Kenya’s Sifa Nafula.
She lost in straight sets to Egypt’s top seed, Hana Goda, in the Round of 16 at the Accra International Conference Centre, and thus was unable to overcome her second obstacle as she lost 0-3 (6-11, 2-11, 144).
Ghana’s head coach, Anthony Owusu-Ansah, attributed the team’s poor performance to a combination of factors, citing a lack of competitive opportunities and inadequate preparation.
In the men’s table tennis singles competition, Team Ghana fielded nine players, led by Sam Bernard, Commey Emmanuel, Aklie Israel, and Quarcoo Ernest Mawutor.
Adom Amankwaa, Borquaye Bernice, Danso Celia, Joanita Borteye, and Kwabi Cynthia represented Ghana in the women’s division.
Unfortunately, things did not go as planned for Ghana’s table tennis participants.
