The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has, today, commissioned the newly constructed Apenkwa Community Astroturf for use.
A brief ceremony to hand over the facility was attended by the National Chief Imam, Dr. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu as the special guest, Designated Minister of Youth & Sport, Mustapha Ussif, and the MP for Okaikoi Central, Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah.
Commissioning the project, the Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah, acknowledged the importance of project as it intersects with GNPC’s CRS focus on Economic Empowerment and Social Infrastructural support to communities.
He said the Apenkwa project is one of 30 at various levels of completion through funding from GNPC and is aimed at economically empowering the youth through sports with an opportunity to improve their skills on standard FIFA pitches.
“Football means a lot to us as a people and at GNPC, our commitment is to contribute to its development one community at a time,” he stated.
He commended the contractor for delivering on its mandate to build a quality pitch and called on the community to imbibe a positive maintenance culture to enable the facility to serve its intended purpose.
Minister of Youth & Sport (Designate), Mustapha Ussif, thanked GNPC for its partnering role in sports infrastructure development across the country. Adding that it aligns with government’s commitment to same and called on other development agencies and private sector players to plug themselves in to reaching more communities.
Expressing his excitement about the project, Hon. Patrick Yaw Boamah, MP for Okaikoi Central, thanked the Board and Executives of GNPC for the vision to reach communities with needed impact projects and support.
He tasked the local stakeholder committee set up to oversee the management and use of the facility to adhere to the agreed terms of usage in ensuring the facility stays in good condition to serve the community for a long time.
