Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Foundation has offered Stephen Koomson, a known Illegal Miner, a full scholarship to study Law at the University of Ghana in the next Academic Year.
The dreams of Stephen Koomson, the brilliant but needy 21-year-old former student of Mpohor Senior High School in the Western Region who, for financial constraints, resorted to Palmwine tapping and illegal mining (Galamsey) has been restored as GNPC, today, offered him a full educational scholarship to pursue Law at the University of Ghana in the next Academic year.
Despite recording an impressive 5As and 3Bs across various subjects in the 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), Stephen Koomson’s education was truncated by the lack of financial support which landed him on farms and galamsey sites in his bid to make ends meet to support himself and his family.
His story coming to light is testament to the power of the media in highlighting important social issues such as this.
‘Social media for good’ is an agenda we all must aspire to grow and I commend Ameyew Ameyaw Debrah for shedding light on young Koomson’s plight that’s seen his educational fortunes now spun on its head.
As a Foundation, we will continue to support the development of Ghanaian capacities through education and training.
