GNPC Foundation, the corporate social investment arm of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation on Wednesday 16th May, 2018 launched its maiden edition of Stem Quiz competition at the Plush Akroma Plaza Hotel in Takoradi.
The competition which is solely for students in the basic public schools within the 22 districts of the Western Region is aim at increasing the interest in the study and pursuit of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Representing the corporate social investment arm of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, the GNPC Foundation is driven by its vision to positively impact on the lives of the Ghanaian people through its three thematic areas of work namely the environment and social amenities, economic empowerment and educational training.
Delivering his speech at the launching ceremony, Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh (Executive Director for the Foundation) stated that,” the Corporation is committed to support the development of human capacity among Ghanaians”.
However, Dr. Kwame Baah Nuakoh continued that, the foundation will support the Government to uplift the study of Science and Technology in our basic schools.
“As a foundation, we recognize the government’s efforts to strengthen and upscale the study of Science and Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Ghana and accept the challenge to play our part in achieving this goal”, He said.
The Executive Director for the Foundation revealed that, the Corporation is aiming at supporting research and human capacity development in the Ghana’s mining and Oil and Gas sector in four Universities.
“GNPC is also among other programmes, establishing Professorial Chairs at four public Universities- University of Ghana, KNUST, UCC and Umat- to support research and human capacity development in Ghana’s mining, oil and gas
“It is my firm expectation that this competition would be the start point of a new paradigm that nurtures and develops a new generation of Ghanaians with the wherewithal to play a significant role in developing Ghana’s extractive industry”. He added
The program was attended by high profile personalities which includes Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II ( Chairman, Board of Trustees- GNPC Foundation) as the Special Guest of Honor, the Western Regional Minister, Educational Director (WR), Dr. Kwame Baah-Nuakoh (Executive Director, GNPC Foundation), Nana Kobina Nketsiah (Omahene of Essikado traditional area) and other higher personalities from GNPC Foundation.
In all six schools will compete in each 22 districts to provide 22 winners who would further be grouped into 6 zones.The six winners will proceed to compete in the final to produce the ultimate Regional GNPC Foundation STEM Quiz champion for 2018.
