Goldstar Air, the wings of Ghana, donated Boxing and Personal Protective Equipments to the Street Academy in Accra, a non-profit sports and culture institution, as part of its corporate social responsibility, with the goal of revitalizing juvenile boxing.
The Academy is a non-governmental organization whose primary mission is to provide education for Ghana’s street, needy, and deprived children.
The Street Academy recognized that a large number of children between the ages of 6 and 15 years lived on the streets and had to do some minimal work for their daily bread, so such deprivation required the academy’s management to focus its efforts on caring for these deprived children.
Mr. Eric Bannerman, the airline’s Executive Chairman/CEO, presented the items and was warmly received by Mr. Ataa Lartey, the founder and director of The Street Academy.
Mr. Bannerman stated that the presentation was intended to supplement The Street Academy’s efforts to ensure that no lives are lost in their daily activities due to the raging COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to educate and train more sports personnel for national teams.[ads3]
Mr. Ataa Lartey thanked Goldstar Air for the timely donation and thanked the airline’s management for their assistance. The generous donation will go a long way toward assisting these children. Best wishes for the Goldstar Air Care Foundation’s continued success and generosity, as you have had a significant positive impact on the lives of people in need.
The Sports & Cultural Academy for Street Children (The Street Academy) was founded in November 1986 by Ataa Lartey, a sports enthusiast and social worker, as a youth program to discover untapped talents in sports and cultural activities. It also operates a non-formal school with three classes in total (special class, beginners, intermediate and advanced).
The children are not required to pay school fees and are encouraged to develop a passion for learning. Those who have shown a strong desire to learn are sent to formal school on the Academy’s scholarship.
Others are assigned to learn a skill (e.g. hair dresser, dress making, practical skills training program etc.) There are currently 620 children, both boys and girls, who are supported by Academy. Around 80 of them attend the Street Academy, while the rest attend formal schools, secondary and technical schools, and universities.
Some of these academy children make up the majority of the current Ghana Police hockey team, and has also produced world boxing champions.
Goldstar Air’s Executive Chairman also stated, “The airline has adopted communities roaming gym for juvenile boxing hunt to produce national champions, so the academy falls in line with the airline vision, and we are here to lend full support to The Street Academy and to partner them for our boxing talent hunt.”
Following the successful launch of the novelty juvenile boxing talent recruitment, former world boxing legend Azumah Nelson showed up and added more color to the highly competitive fights, teenagers, including girls, were engaged in right in front of the Gbese Mantse’s palace in the heart of Accra, praising the organizers for the initiative, which he believes could bring the country more world champions if sustained.[ads1]
This is a fantastic idea, and we should all thank the organizers for launching it. If properly managed, I have no doubt that the country will become the best exporter of boxers in the world because, as we have seen here, the kids are extremely talented.
The young boxers reiterate their belief that with a little more investment, boxing has the potential to become the shining star of Ghanaian sports.
Former President of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) Mr Peter Zwennes, Celebrated Ghanaian boxing referee/judge Mr. Eddie Pappoe, International boxing referee/judge Michael Neequaye, International boxing promoter George Johnson, and other dignitaries have also graced the occasion for the boxing talent hunt.
The indigenous airline will initially be flying to twelve destinations from Accra namely, London, Baltimore Washington International Airport, Dubai, Providence International Airport, Guangzhou, Dakar, Lagos, Monrovia, Abidjan, Freetown, Banjul, Conakry and pending cities, Atlanta-Georgia, Chicago-Illinois, Glasgow-Scotland and Houston-Texas. Goldstar Air is also projecting a fleet of more than one hundred (100) modern aircrafts to a network of more than ninety (90) key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, Caribbean and North America
The presentation was witnessed by Amalie Leolnar, Fannie Klint, Christian Pasfall, Kristoffer Refsgaard, Emilie Haugaard, Matilde Holm, Anders Aabo, Irene Attoh, and Malanie Mennella.
Mr. Charles Nettey, Mr. Edmund Lamptey, Mr. Edwin Lamptey, Racheal Quaynor, Excel Norman, and Mr Abraham Armah were among those who attended.
