The government of Ghana has declared May 2, 2022 as a public holiday.
This was contained in a statement from the Interior Ministry issued to Ghanaians dated April 25, 2022.
The statement says the May 2 has been declared a public holiday to celebrate the Workers’ Day which falls on Sunday, May 1, 2022.
“However, in view of the fact that May 1, 2022 falls on a Sunday, His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Ghana, has by Executive Instrument (E.I), in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601) declared Monday, May 2, 2021, as an additional Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.
Ghanaians have been encouraged to observe the day throughout the country.
Ghanaian workers observed their first May Day in 1960 and Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, was declared the “First Number One Worker” and decorated with a May Day Award by the Trades Union Congress.
