The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has advised fishermen not to over rely on the government insurance policy because it’s not sustainable.
Speaking at a fishermen forum held at Upper Dixcove in the Ahanta West district, the minister entreats fisherfolks to inculcate the habit of insuring themselves for the future benefit since the government cannot sustain the ability of insuring all fishermen in the country.
“The government cannot sustain the ability of insuring all fishermen but you can use part of the profit you make to insure yourselves for the future”
She also urged fishermen to avoid the use of monofilament fishing line and other chemicals for fishing and however affirmed the government readiness in protecting the sea.
“I will urge you all to stop using monofilament net and chemicals for fishing because its destroys the sea and the government is ready to help”, she said.
This year’s forum was under the theme ‘Empowering communities for effective fisheries co-management, the role of traditional leaders’.
