Grammy’s newly created Best African Music Performance which was announced by the Academy Board on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 will recognize Highlife, Ghanaian Drill and Asakaa.
The introduction of the category was due to the recent resurgence of Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tens and several others as well as the global recognition the Afrobeats genre is gaining in recent time according to the announcement made.
The newly created category also “recognizes recordings that utilizes local expressions across the African continent” and also the emergence of this category take into “cognisance Afrobeats, Afro-fusion, Afro-pop, Bongo Flava… Ghanaian drill”.
It has taken months of speculations which is now confirmed according to the decision by the academy.
