President of Great United Footballers Association ( GUFA), Francis Akwaffo is extremely worried over lack of football in the country.
Football activities in the country has been seized since last year following the sadden behaviors captured by camera in Anas Aremeyaw Ana’s Number 12 video expose, which uncovered the rot in Ghana football.
FIFA in conjunction with the government of Ghana appointed a Normalization Committee headed by Dr. Kofi Amoah with the task to bring football in the country to normalcy.
The Committee however initiated a special competition to fill the void for both Premier League and Division One clubs while the normilazation process continues. The competition was cancelled due to unwillingness on the part of the Premier League Clubs to cooperate with the Committee.
With this, Akwaffo who believes the cancellation of the competition is unfortunate revealed in an interview with Kyfilla.com that most of the local based professional players are seriously suffering due to lack of football in the country.
According to him, majority of the local based players depend solely on football for survival and currently are not paid due to the absence of football in the country.
“It’s sad that the special competition has been cancelled but am praying for it to be reinstated.
” Most of the local based players are suffering because football is what they depend on for survival and now that there is no football activities in the country, they are not paid”, he cried to Kyfilla.com.
GUFA is an association for both retired and active players and currently has over 250 professional players associated with Francis Akwaffo as the President whilst Gabriel Opoku Ware served as the Vice.
Local based footballers such Asante Kotoko skipper Amos Frimpong, Felix Annan, Stephen Manu, Malik Akowuah, Isaac Amoako, Abeiku Ainosoon, Samuel Afful are all members of the association.
Others include Iddrissu Yahaya, Don Bortey, Joseph Hendricks,Rashid Sumaila, Osei Pele, Frank Boateng, Joseph Tagoe, Kweku Essien, Vincent Atingah, Yusif Chibsah, Nurudeen etc.
