The Ghanaian chapter of the Duke of Edinburgh’s international awards herein known as the Head of State Awards Scheme is a carefully crafted and structured program that seeks to bring to the fore the hidden skills and talents in young people between the ages of 14 -24.
It equally seeks to expose these kids to hitherto unknown and tough conditions that will prepare them for the real world. These young achievers are equally given the chance to play a crucial role in shaping the very communities they live in.
This is achieved through the undertaking of voluntary community services which can improve sanitation, education and serve as a major tool to sensitize urban and rural folks on certain pertinent issues of national concern.
The award thus comprise these four main activities:
1. Skill Development
2. Community Service
3. Physical Recreation
4. Expedition/Exploration.
On the 31st of July 2018 to the 9th of August 2018, The award secretariat will organize the gold exploration, (31st of July to 9th of August)
And bronze and silver award expedition (5th of August to the 9th of August).
Per this program, the award seeks to prepare these award participants to contribute their quota in nation building.
After educating the students on issues of national concern example: Education, Sanitation, Health and Drug abuse, Rural – Urban migration etc.
These students from award participating institutions such as Takoradi Senior High School, Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High, St.John’s school, Sekondi College, Adiembra Senior High, Fijai Senior High School, St. Augustine’s Senior High – Bogoso, Half Assini Senior high School, will visit some communities in the Wassa East District to help solve problems that confront the indigenes.
The selected communities include:
1. Kwaaba
2. Adeankyewodanmu
3. Awiadaso
4. Tsimtsimhw3
5. Krofofrom
6. Abosompem
8. Sekyere Krobo
9. Akrofi
10. Mensakrom.
Major stakeholders will be contacted to partner these award participants to combat and help curb the very problems that confront them. The objective is therefore to help these kids contribute their quota in nation building.
