Manchester United’s rising star, Kobbie Mainoo, has revealed the reasons behind his decision to represent England on the international stage, rather than his parents’ homeland, Ghana.
The 19-year-old, born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, to Ghanaian parents, enjoyed a breakthrough season with United, making 32 appearances across all competitions and netting five goals.
This impressive form earned him a place in England’s squad for the ongoing UEFA Euro 2024 tournament.
While acknowledging his strong connection to Ghana, Mainoo confessed that playing for England’s Three Lions has always been a personal aspiration. In an interview, Mainoo disclosed,
“Naturally, I am incredibly proud of my Ghanaian heritage, and there was some talk about representing them,” Mainoo stated during a press conference. “However, playing for England has always been a dream of mine, so I’m delighted to be here. I did consider Ghana, but my desire to play for England ultimately prevailed.”
Mainoo’s journey with the English national team began at youth level, where he represented England at under-17, under-18, and under-19 levels. He made his senior debut in March 2024.
