Health Minister, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu has disclosed that he no longer use the Heath insurance card whenever he wants access to healthcare.
According to the 67-year old, he prefers the cash and carry system whenever he visit the hospital for healthcare instead of using the national health insurance card due to the numerous challenges users face.
Speaking in a meeting of Ghana Health Service Senior Managers on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, the Minister said some service providers under the scheme are being accused of extortion and that presents a bad image.
“I pay when I go to Ridge Hospital. I pay when I go to UGMC. I don’t even present my insurance card”, he revealed.
“From the end-user point of view, it looks like the health insurance is not working. I am a patient and I know what it is,” he indicated.
He stated that complaints about the poor treatment meted out to subscribers are affecting the scheme and that has to stop.
“There are complaints that are coming about how those who are subscribed to health insurance are treated in almost all our facilities. So why shouldn’t we use the harsh word… extorting from the poor patients”, he added.
