Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko skipper Joseph Hendricks has sorrowful revealed his feelings concerning the 2005 CAF Confederation Cup final against arch rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
Hearts of Oak managed to clinch the ultimate at the expense of the Porcupine Warriors at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi by 8:7 on penalty shootouts after both legs ended in a 1:1 stalemate.
Hendricks who was the captain for Kotoko during the cagey encounter missed his spot kick after Amankwah Mireku had missed his but later on Edmund Owusu Ansah missed his to pave way for the Phobians to win the trophy for the very first time.
On Wednesday, January 9,2019 marked exactly 14 years that such tragedy happened in Kumasi where thousands of Asante Kotoko supporters went into total mourning after Hearts of Oak winning the trophy in Kumasi on penalty shootouts.
Speaking to Sekondi based Radio Silver, Hendricks commented that he feels sad whenever he remembers what happened on the day and added that Kotoko learnt a lesson after the game.
“It’s sad whenever I remember what happened at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on the day”, he said.
” We should have won the trophy for the very first time even though Hearts of Oak showed eagerness and that aided them to win but we learnt a great lesson from the game.
” When I missed the penalty, the whole of the stadium especially Kotoko fans were totally down and it’s something I will never forget in my life.
