Bankroller of Division One League side, New Edubiase FC has declared his support for the Ghana Football Association’s quest to replace the existing 48 teams zonal Division One League with 18 team national league.
The GFA on Thursday, May 14 communicated a decision to form a 5-member committee to propose reforms for the formation of the 18-team national league to replace the zonal leagues.
Abdul Salam Yakubu has thrown his weight behind the GFA in this regard, saying the format used currently has no value.

“I support the idea 100 percent; the 48 teams’ zonal leagues have no value so I support the decision 100 percent. Check the English Championship and other national leagues, ours have no value – teams collapse after every season.
“The team are many(48 teams) so whenever we share money each team gets a peanut. Let’s wait on the committee and the reforms that they’ll bring. Whether 5 teams relegated and one promoted from Division 2 or any other reform” – He told Solomon Amankwah of Kyzz FM in Takoradi.
He added that the season is far stretched to think of continuing the league. He says it’ll be better to annul the season looking at the conditions now.

“We cannot continue the league; we have already spent two weeks already so we need to think of a new season, because we are already two months without playing football”.
According to Abdul Salam, players are paid peanuts to even think of a pay cut.
“We are not paying enough to even think of pay-cut, what we pay them is small to even think of a pay cut. Maybe, the technical team that once in a while we slash some out of it”.
