Hearts of Oak midfielder, Gladson Awako has said before Hearts of Oak could approach him, he wanted to play for a team abroad.
Awako returned to play in the Ghana top-flight football for Great Olympics after stint with American outfit Phoenix Rising in 2018.[ads2]
He joined Great Olympics as a free agent in 2019, and became one of the top performers in the league last season, attracting interest from top clubs including Hearts of Oak.
“My motive was to move outside, I joined Olympics to relaunch my career and I played two seasons but the chance to move outside didn’t come”, Awako told Juliet Bawuah in an interview on TV3.[ads3]
Asked why he decided to join Hearts of Oak, the former TP Mazembe star said, ” I believe it was time to change environment and get a new competition or to experience a different environment. Hearts was doing well with good set of players and going to a different competition which is the Champions League (CAF) which I felt per where am coming from, I wanted to be in that competition, so they [Hearts of Oak] spoke with me and the coach [Samuel Boadu] explained to me his plans and I felt it was right to join them.”
Gladson Awako joined Hearts of Oak on a two-year deal from their city rival Accra Great Olympics for an undisclosed fee during the last domestic transfer window.[ads4]
The midfield kingpin shockingly stopped training with the club in September, two weeks after his acquisition from Great Olympics for an unknown reason.
This became a topical issue with a report that Awako has alleged a spiritual attack on him as reason for refusing to train with the team.
The 30-year old after barely two months, has started training for Hearts of Oak, and currently at the team’s camp preparing for CAF Confideration Cup game against Algerian outfit JS Soura at the Accra Sports Stadium this Sunday.[ads5]
