Rex Omar, a politician and musician from Ghana, has stated that he would accept a political position if offered one.
NDC member Rex Omar stated this on March 3, 2024, in an interview with Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z with Kwame Dadzie. He clarified that he would be happy to take the position, provided it fits within his purview.
“I will accept a political appointment because I believe I am of age now and I will be able to positively contribute to the development of this country if I am given any appointment that is within my capacity,” he said to Kwame Dadzie, the host.
“When we get to that road, we will cross it because, at the end of the day, all these positions are political appointments, and so long as you are smart and intelligent and you know what is going on in this country, wherever they put you, you can deliver if you want to,” he said in response to the question of whether he would want to hold a position at the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture.
He said the current 4-year term is not enough for any government to make a meaningful impact on the economy.
We follow suit because elections are held in America every four years, but the issue is that American democracy has existed for more than 200 years. We just started, okay? So look at our situation,” he said.
He proposed that a six-year term would allow the current government to function admirably.
“I think it [the four years] is too much. I would have wished we could go six years in one term. Because you use a year or a year and a half to set up your government if you are granted six years. You can not do anything if you are unable to do anything for four or five years. There is no need for you to go for a second term.
The whole situation is, look at our scenario. Following the election, the first year is now when the government is established, complete with appointments and other matters. By the time the government settles to start rolling out its program, you are getting to two years,” he added.
Afterward, he followed a solo career, put out excellent albums, gave performances both inside and outside of Ghana, received multiple honors, and was nominated for a 2004 Kora Award.
Rex Omar was a member of NAKOREX, a renowned highlife group that included himself, Nat Brew, and Akosua Agyapong.
