England and Manchester United defender Harry Maguire think that in the gifted Kobbie Mainoo, Manchester United have found their own Jude Bellingham.
Following his outstanding FA Cup performance against Liverpool, the 18-year-old has emerged as a key member of United’s squad and received his first senior Three Lions call-up. Mainoo displayed his midfield qualities against one of the favorites for the competition before receiving a standing ovation after being sacrificed after 80 minutes.
Maguire, who has over 60 caps for England, heaped praise on his club and now-international teammate, tipping the youngster to be on the plane to Germany as a member of the Euros squad and comparing him to Jude Bellingham.
Mainoo may have only made his first Premier League start in November, but he has made an enduring impression at United. Maguire is certain that the academy product is prepared and won’t be scared going into the tournament.
“I don’t see why not,” said Maguire. That experience is important when competing in a major tournament, but young boys can also succeed by playing fearlessly.
”I don’t have any concerns whatsoever. He is only eighteen, but already he seems so adult. He’s a bit like Jude was when he was a young boy. He’s got a mature head on his shoulders. I had no concerns.
“I observe his training ability every day. He just wants to work hard and do well. I congratulated him, said he deserved it, kept it up, and ensured he enjoyed himself.
“He’s got everything; he can handle the ball brilliantly. He’s really strong and powerful, and you can see the progression to play that role, especially for Manchester United.
“Listen, there are a lot of talented center midfielders in our nation right now. These players have proven they can compete in the biggest, most important competitions. He is a fantastic lad, so I do not doubt that he will continue to work hard. It’s an exciting time for him and his family. We will see where it goes.”
The 31-year-old continued, “I told him to text me about anything, schedule-wise, or if he needed anything, just ask. He deserves it so much.” He has been excellent for us this season.
“Developing academy players is one of the senior players’ roles and responsibilities at Manchester United. Little boys have always been the foundation of the club; many of them train with us frequently, and we make an effort to make them feel at home.
“And that’s a big role and responsibility of the senior players, and we have done that to Kobbie. Even more so when he joins this group with England, it is crucial that he feels at home and comfortable.”
