The Works and Housing Minister, Francis Asenso-Boakye on Monday, June 28, 2021 together with experts from the Ministry embarked on a day’s working visit to the city of Kumasi, to have a first-hand assessment of areas affected by recent floods.
They visited Kejetia, Asafo and Bantama markets where the Minister had an interaction with the traders.
At Asafo, a group of traders expressed worry over construction of a market store on drainage channel ehich has a hindrance to the free flow of storm water, resulting in the recent floods in the market.
As a matter of urgency, the Minister charged the city authorities to take immediate steps to demolish the structure concerned to resolve the flooding challenge – the city engineers began the demolition exercise at the time he was leaving the market.
At Bantama, solid waste had blocked the underground drains in the market, resulting in the recent floods in the area. Also at Kejetia, a number of timber logs discovered in the underground drains had impeded the free flow of storm water and it contributed to the floods in the new Kejetia market.
Much as government is making huge investments in the provision of robust drainage systems, he admonished the people to also play their part by desisting from dumping solid waste into drains as the task remains a collective one.
