The Youth and Sports Minister, Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah has urged Ghanaians to do away with violence and hooliganism at match centres to prevent another disaster in Ghana football.
According to the minister, Ghanaians should capitalize on the May 9th disaster which occurred way back 2001 in a match between two arch rivals in Ghana football, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium where many lives were destroyed, to demonstrate maturity at the various stadia during matches.
“As we mourn and remember the 127 lives lost on May 9, 2001 at the Accra sports stadium in a football match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko, I would like to use this 18th commemoration year to urge football fans and supporters to demonstrate maturity at our various stadia during matches”, he said during the commemoration of the May 9th disaster in Accra.
“Let us do away with any act of violence, hooliganism in any form that could bring disaster during football matches.”
He however noted that, the government would be collaborating with the appropriate quarters and agencies to discipline any supporter or fan that engages in any form of violence at match venue.
“We still have fans and supporters who would misbehave at match venues and by this the Government is collaborating with the appropriate bodies and agencies to discipline any supporter or fan that engages in any form of violence at any match venue.”
