The Western Regional Table Tennis Association on Friday 18th May, 2018 held a Clinic and Competition for basic schools at the Sekondi Youth Center.
The events which started around 9am saw over 100 kids taken through some basic skills and drills in table tennis such as bouncing, multi-ball feeding, rallies, warm-up, stretching, warm down, racket gripping and also the benefit of engaging in table tennis.
Students were selected from six schools within the Sekondi township in the Western region of Ghana namely Wesley Methodist, Old Hospital, Rev. Griffeson, St. Andrews Anglican Complex, Apremdo and A.M.E Zion Junior High School. These students were accompanied by their various teachers in a delightful manner.
Under the auspices of the Ghana Table Tennis Association [GTTA] , National Sports Authority [NSA] and the Ghana Education Service [GES], the event was very successful and worth repeating in other regions of Ghana.
Distinguished guests present were director of National Sports Authority for Western Region Jeffery Manza Owusu, Emmanuel Bannerman, Chairman of Western Region Table Tennis Association, Representatives from Ghana Education Service Victor Farmeh, current Ghana Veteran’s Champion Samuel Ashittey Amarh, Organizer of Ghana Veteran’s Association Adolf Awortwe, Joshua Okine, Godwin Aseku, Isaac Amoako, Abena Antwi, Ben Forson, Romeo Carl Ansah, Coach Paa Kwesi Andoh, Coach Isaac Essel, Joseph Amissah and Emmanuel Kofi Nti.
The clinics was sponsored by Miksi Choco Limited and Jason Onyameh of Divine Travel and Tour.
“Increasing the base number of table tennis players in the country and unearthing talent in the basic schools are the priorities of Western Region Table Tennis Association.Early projects of this kind have received donations from Sarah Hanfou and Ping San Frontiers. These include Increasing girls’ participation in table tennis in both junior high schools in Sekondi and Takoradi township”, organizer of the association Ishmael Abraham Armah said.
“I organized the Miksi Table Tennis Clinics to whip up the interest of the game and impact the basic skills of table tennis into the school-going child. The project seeks to have players from the region to compete in all divisions in the national level. In order to get these goals achieved, we appeal to all sundry to make effort in equipping our association with table tennis boards, rackets, robot, balls, footwear and jerseys to motivate the target group and facilitate their interest in this noble sports”,
“Again the association seeks to extend their activities to cover other part of the region and will therefore call on all stakeholders and parties to support these activities” He added.
However, after the event, Romeo Ansah from Takoradi took home the first prize whereas Joseph Amissah grabbed the second place with Joshua Okine from the Greater Accra and Isaac Amoako both sitting third and fourth respectively.
