The Ministry of Communication and Digitalization has climaxed its flagship programme meant to encourage female participation in ICT in the Western North Region.
The programme dubbed “Girls-In-ICT” was an initiative by the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization with telecommunication company MTN as partners.
Over thousand girls in the region participated in the training held in five districts within the region namely; Boadi, Suaman, Akontombra, Aowin and Prestea Huni-Valley.
One of the participants identified as Ella, a 13-year old girl was able to develop a computer game after just a week of intensive training.
Speaking at the celebration, the Senior Manager of Network Performance, Louisa Ama Sosu, on behalf of the Chief Corporate Services Officer Sam Koranteng, lauded the Minister of Communication and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu Ekuful for the initiative aimed at encouraging and empowering girls and young women to consider studies and careers in the growing field of ICTs, enabling both girls and technology companies to reap the benefits of greater female participation in the ICT sector.[ads4]
She said, “MTN is excited about the planned collaboration between the Ministry of Communications & Digitilization and the Education Ministry as they incorporate ICT education into the basic education curriculum.”
She indicated that the national broadband infrastructure development programme for the ICT Sector, with a special focus on providing total connectivity to the unserved and underserved communities across the country is a laudable intervention worth commending, and MTN is confident that these interventions will all provide solid foundations to scale the Girls in ICT initiative.
Mrs. Sosu revealed that MTN has endorsed a global movement to ensure female children are not left out of the plethora of future opportunities that access to technology brings.
She reiterated that the government and sector Minister are extremely passionate about equipping and nurturing young female talents to compete on a global scale, and as such have consistently and significantly over the last 4years invested in this initiative.
On her advise to the participants, Mrs. Ama Sosu said, ” to our mentees, I would like to encourage you to fully utilize this opportunity and many others that would come to adequately prepare you for future job markets.
“Read wide, ask questions, get mentors and constantly develop yourself. The future is digital, and you are very fortunate to be part of this program. Don’t waste it. Beyond this program try and read more and practice more if you have the resources.
“Also, put technology at the heart of your development plan as this will give you a competitive advantage over your peers and career mobility to earn more.”
The minister of communication and digitalisation, Urusla Owusu Ekuful, on her part said, “I believe that if we better understand the role of technology and the opportunities therein and find a better way to communicate it to our young girls while at the same time showcasing female role models in the field, we stand a better chance of churning out more technology-focused young women. ”
