Gunmen ambushed a convoy in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta, killing six people, including four soldiers, and kidnapping two South Korean employees, the army and a security source reported on Wednesday.
Although there have been fewer militant attacks in the Niger Delta over time, the area is still unstable due to pipeline damage and theft of crude oil, which has reduced Nigeria’s oil production.
Soldiers on routine escort duty for an oil-servicing company in southern Rivers State were attacked by suspected militants on Tuesday, according to Jonah Danjuma, the army spokesperson for Nigeria’s 6 Division.
“Unfortunately, four soldiers were killed in action, with two other oil workers unaccounted for,” Danjuma said in a statement.
According to sources, two civilian drivers had also died in the attack, adding that the unaccounted-for oil workers were South Korean nationals.
