A mine collapse in Galkogo village, in the Shiroro local government area of Niger State, Nigeria, has resulted in the confirmed death of one person.
As of Monday evening, thirty more people, including the mine manager, Alhaji Ibrahim Ishyaku, were still stranded in the collapsed mine.
Six more people were rescued from the collapsed mine with “serious injuries,” according to a report from the area.
The mine was owned by “African Minerals and Logistics Limited,” according to Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), who confirmed this on Tuesday.
Rescuers had to flee for their lives as the mine “kept falling inside,” according to Arah, who blamed the collapse on “persistent rainfall impacts that soften the soil.”
Arah claimed that even though an excavator had been dispatched to help with the rescue efforts, “the area is unacceptable because of the nature of the environment as a result of banditry.”
There have reportedly been continuous banditry operations for the previous four days in a few communities located in the local government areas of Shiroro and Mashegu. This has also been confirmed by NSEMA.
According to NSEMA, six people were abducted on Sunday as a result of an attack on the village of Adogo Mallam.
It stated that in a separate incident that occurred on Monday at the Tunga Kawo community, which is three kilometers from Erena in the Shiroro Local Government, bandits attacked the community and abducted over twenty people along with hundreds of cows.
