Michael Essien had an illustrious career during 20-years of playing football including spells with Chelsea, Real Madrid and AC Milan. He also played under some of the best managers in the game.
Managers such as Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Guus Hiddink and etc but non of them motivated him into coaching but himself.
“I just woke up one day and thought, ‘Let me start doing something,'” Essien tells BBC Sport.
“I started coaching so I could learn how it is to be a coach. Now I talk to a few of [my former managers]. Just normal talk – nothing tactical.
Essien also shed a bit light on the coaching job as to why he now understands why his former manager Jose Mourinho was mostly angry with both players and fans alike. He now knows how tedious the job is as he is now a coach.
The Ghanaian international also mentioned how working with Ancelotti and Mourinho has broaden his understanding of the game.
“I had some great, great managers that I was lucky to work under. I learned a few things from Jose and from Ancelotti – his calmness and how he manages his players, the way he tried to put his arms around his players.
Essien is now a coach of Danish top flight club FC Nordsjaelland after retiring from football.
