The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a fugitive, placing him on its wanted list for alleged involvement in multiple high-profile corruption cases. Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng announced this development during a press briefing on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
According to Mr. Agyebeng, Mr. Ofori-Atta has consistently failed to respond to invitations for questioning related to ongoing investigations in which he is a suspect. The cases under scrutiny include:
1. National Cathedral Procurement Scandal: Investigations into procurement irregularities associated with the National Cathedral project.
2. Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML) Contract: Examination of a contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Limited, allegedly signed during Mr. Ofori-Atta’s tenure.
3. Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and Beijing Jao Loss Reduction Contract: Assessment of a contract aimed at reducing system losses, involving the ECG and Beijing Jao.
4. Health Ministry’s Ambulance Procurement: Inquiry into contracts awarded by the Ministry of Health to Service Ghana Auto Limited for the procurement of ambulances.
Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives have informed the OSP that he is currently abroad for medical treatment and is unable to return to Ghana. However, the Special Prosecutor has expressed skepticism regarding the authenticity of the medical documentation provided, describing it as “concocted.” Mr. Agyebeng emphasized that the OSP is determined to ensure Mr. Ofori-Atta’s return to face questioning and will employ all necessary measures to compel his appearance.
In a related development, the OSP has denied allegations of conducting a raid on Mr. Ofori-Atta’s residence on February 11, 2025. Mr. Agyebeng suggested that the purported raid was either staged or carried out by imposters attempting to discredit the OSP and derail its ongoing investigations. He affirmed that the OSP remains undeterred by such occurrences and will continue its investigations as prescribed by law.
This declaration marks a significant escalation in the legal challenges facing the former finance minister, as the OSP intensifies its efforts to hold him accountable for the alleged offenses.
