All of a sudden, Ghanaian gospel musician, Piesie Esther for this year’s prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) artiste of the year has accelerated in the media space.
The Empareme hit-maker is churning out support from the gospel fraternity despite being deemed the underdog in the category. She is competing with colleague gospel artiste and former winner of the category Joe Mettle alongside heavyweights like Sarkodie, Black Sheriff, KiDi, King Promise and Camidoh who strive to fame with his ‘Sugarcane’ single.
The Church of Pentecost with over 4.2 million members worldwide has been backing their Deaconess to win all the seven nominated categories including the overall artiste of the year gong.
Before Piesie Esther’s sudden mammoth support, Black Sheriff of Empire Music fame was the leading candidate for the topmost award considering his inconceivable fame in the year under retrospect where he even bagged a BET International flow award nomination but ended up losing it to French hip-hop artiste Benjamin Epps. The ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ composer made huge impact in the music fraternity featuring top lads like Burna Boy, Darkoo, Stormzy and even featured on track 2 of Hollywood Blockbuster, Creed III soundtrack dubbed; Blood, Sweat & Tears.
But out of the blue, Piesie Esther’s unanticipated support from the gospel fraternity could let the artiste of the year accolade elude Sheriff who has been heavily tipped by award-winning Ghanaian reggae/ dancehall gem Ras Kuuku to clinch the topmost award.
Should Piesie Esther capture the enviable award, she will become the third artiste from the gospel fraternity to win the award after Diana Hamilton and Joe Mettle.
Meanwhile, this year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) organised by Charterhouse will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, May 6, 2023.
