The President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Kwabena Yeboah has attributed poor attendance by fans to various match venues on match days to the player exodus that has led to the unavailability of stars in the league.
One major problem that Ghana Premier League has been facing in recent years has been the issue concerning low attendance at various stadia. Being interviewed on Asempa FM this morning, the Celebrated Kwabena Yeboah disclosed that one reason that people do not go to stadia anymore is that they do not have a reason to go.
He explained that in those years that people troop to match centres, they had a reason to go. With the reason being that they had a player who they admired and were passionate about to go and watch them play and mesmerize them.
“Football all over the world is about stars. You must have a reason for watching a match and in the past, why the stands were always filled was because you had players you had to go and watch”.
“Because those days, the early 70s Robert Mensah alone would bring everybody to the stadium”, he cited.
The Sports Show host on GTV emphasized that football exodus is, unfortunately, affecting our football because every single season most of our players are leaving which does not allow supporters to have a player they like for them to want to go to the stadium and watch.
The writer further stated until we do our things well and players are paid reasonable fees and not slave wages to convince them to stay in the country for three to four years, then the league will continue to suffer in terms of fans going to stadia.
