United States President Joe Biden has dropped out of the 2024 presidential run.
In a move that takes the contest into uncharted terrain, the US president stated that he will not seek a second term.
Instead, another Democrat must be picked to face Republican nominee Donald Trump in November, in a race already fraught with tension, division, and an assassination attempt.
In a letter released today, Sunday July 21, 2024. President Biden stated that his decision not to seek re-election is in the best interest of the party and that he will address the country later to provide details on his decision.
He expressed gratitude to his Vice President and the American people for the confidence the trust they had to elect him.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term.”
He has endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee, saying: “Democrats – it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”-Joe Biden stated.
The 46th US president’s withdrawal from the campaign puts the Democratic Party in an unusual position, with barely a month until the Democratic National Convention and fewer than four months until the November 5 election.
Whoever succeeds Biden will confront the Republican presidential contender and former President Donald Trump.
