Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye has entreats fishermen in the country to report anyone who engages in illegal fishing.
Speaking at the Fishermen forum at Upper Dixcove in the Ahanta West district, the minister urged various fishermen in the country to team up with their traditional leaders in dealing with those who are engaging in illegal fishing.
According to the Minister, the use of monofilament fishing line, DDT and other chemicals for fishing is what is destroying our sea and will therefore urge fishermen to report colleagues who uses those unacceptable element for fishing.
“I will urge you all to report those who engages in illegal fishing to your traditional leaders because those mode of fishing is destroying our sea.
“If we report them to our leaders and they are dealt with, it will serve as a deterrent to others and by so doing we protect our sea”, she said.
She also added that the government decision of placing a ban on fishing was to improve fishing activities in the country not to impoverish them as the Minority in Parliament were saying.
“The ban on fishing activities was to help you fishermen and not to impoverish you as the minority in parliament were saying because this government cares about fishermen” she added
