Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate is set to convince youngster Kobbie Mainoo to play for England amid concerns that he could represent Ghana instead.
Mainoo was superb and a delight to watch on his Premier League debut against Everton on Sunday.
Mainoo, a midfielder, was born to Ghanaian parents in Stockport, England. He made his competitive debut in January when he started in a 3-0 EFL Cup win over Charlton, but it was a pre-season friendly against Real Madrid where he showcased his enormous potential before suffering an ankle injury.
According to the Daily Star, Southgate is trying all he can to see him commit his international future to the Three Lions instead. In an effort to convince the midfield player to remain in his native nation, Southgate is anticipated to have discussions with him.
Players can change allegiances in accordance with FIFA regulations if they have participated in no more than three games (including friendlies), none of which were in the World Cup or Confederation competition final, and all of which took place before the player turned 21.
In Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Everton for United, the 18-year-old was undoubtedly the best player on the field, living up to Erik ten Hag’s early confidence in him.
Mainoo, who joined United as a teenager, is regarded as the brightest prospect of the current United crop of youngsters. He was rewarded with his first professional contract, worth about £10,000 a week, earlier this year after helping United win the FA Youth Cup in 2022.
Similar to Ten Hag, Southgate has reportedly been closely monitoring Mainoo’s development and is aware that the highly-regarded midfield player may still decide to play for the Black Stars.
