The Youth and Sports Minister, Isaac Kwame Asiamah, has divulged that, his outfit are in ‘serious’ talks with the Ghana Football Association Normalization Committee to end payment of bonuses to Ghana’s youth national teams.
The payment of bonuses to the national youth teams especially the U-17 footballers in particular, has seen most football pundits raising questions, with some stressing out that handing such huge monies to young footballers at such a tender age breeds an entitlement of mentality.
According to the Sports Minister, even though young footballers have to earn from the game, a spirit of volunteerism and sacrifice for the nation must be instilled in them.
Speaking at the Public Accounts Committee, the Atwima Mponua Member of Parliament stressed that his outfit are in engagement with the GFA Normalization Committee to put a stop to the payment of youth team bonuses but will support such young footballers with bursaries or scholarship as reward.
“We are engaged with the Normalization Committee over some of these engagements. As a country, we should be looking at offering players below 17 years bursaries or scholarship support as their reward”, he said.
“The decision will soon be made on the future of these allowances, bonuses and payment to our junior teams.
“We seriously need to look into these things, so that we can incorporate a sense of volunteerism.
